Thailand
8 bath / kWh + energy cost for 10 years
The feed in tariff in Thailand is making a statement. That statement is “We care... but not that much.” Thailand’s feed in tariff is abysmally weak. Not because the political structure doesn’t want a strong policy, but because they really can’t afford one. The cost of energy per kWh is so low that adding a bonus which is nearly double the average cost of energy on top of the cost of energy still does not cover the installation cost of a solar energy installation. If the feed in tariff system were extended to a 20 year period, Thailand’s feed in tariff may cover the cost and produce enough of a profit to encourage investors to assist in building the infrastructure required for the country to move forward. However, the system which has been announced is grossly inadequate to service the needs of investors which desire to enter Thailand’s market. But the feed in tariff in place does little to entice them, and the 10 year period does not allow for a return on investment at all.
One thumb up for effort, Thailand. The other thumb down for practicability. The feeling still remains that you are missing the opportunity to improve your infrastructure in a responsible and sustainable way.
